Infographic: What is CBD and Why Do We Love It?

It almost feels like CBD is being used everywhere now as a wellness product, especially if you live in a state where it is legal. There are new, innovative and creative ways to use CBD; from beauty lotions to lattes to spa treatments. But what exactly is CBD and how does it differ from THC, another chemical compound in cannabis? This article will help you understand.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant, the other famous one being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the plant, which means it doesn’t give a feeling of ecstasy. This compound is used to give a calm feeling without getting the user high.

Hemp and marijuana are the two main species of the cannabis plant, and they contain varying amounts of CBD. Hemp has higher amounts of CBD than marijuana, with only 0.03% of THC.

How it Works?

Cannabinoids work when they create effects in the body by attaching to particular receptors. The receptors called CB1 and CB2 are present all over the body with the majority of them located in the brain.

The CB1 receptors present in the brain handle memories, pain, appetite, coordination, movement, and a lot of other functions. CB2 receptors are more present in the immune system and affect mainly pain and inflammation. The human body also produces its own cannabinoids, and researchers believe CB2 works by directing the body to use more of it.

CBD and THC are often mistaken by a lot of people, but they are not the same. Albeit they do have some similarities, there are also differences that set them apart. They have the same molecular structure comprised of 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms, which has the same effects on the CB2 receptors. They are also similar to the endocannabinoids produced by the body.

Their differences also make them easier to differentiate and recognize. Their atomic structure arrangement is different which causes the different reactions of our body to these compounds. They also have different effects on the CB1 receptors.
