Eyelid inflammation occurs when the oil glands in hair follicles become irritated or clogged. Some factors, which can cause the eyelid inflammation, are eyelash mites or lice, dandruff on your eyebrows or scalp, side effects of medication, etc. Itchy eyelids, burning sensations in your eyes, swollen or inflamed eyelids, red eyes, watery eyes, or oily eyelids are the common symptoms of eyelid inflammation.


You can try a few simple natural home remedies for minor symptoms. However, if your symptoms are severe and last long, you should visit your doctor immediately. In this article, I will reveal you 8 natural remedies for eyelid inflammation. You should try all to find the best one that is suitable and works well for you.
Eyelid Inflammation

1. Warm Compresses

Warm compresses help minimize debris and scales around the eyelashes. Further, the warm compresses’ heat promotes blood circulation, which is necessary for quick healing. Here is the method:

  1. The first step is to take a clean washcloth and immerse it in warm water.
  2. Then, wring it out and now place it over the closed eyelid for several minutes. Repeat this process for 3-4 times.
  3. After that, use a clean cloth to remove any oily scales or debris on your eyelid.
  4. To improve your condition, you should follow this process a few times per day.
  5. If your both eyes are infected you need to use divided washcloths for each eye.

2. Tea Tree Oil

Using tea tree oil can help alleviate the symptoms of eye inflammation, such as itching and inflammation. In addition, this oil also helps eliminate ocular demodex and enhance subjective ocular symptoms as well. According to a study of Korean Medical Science in 2012, eye inflammation caused due to demodex mites can be cured with tea tree oil. To use this oil, follow these steps below:

  1. The first step is to mix 2 -3 tea tree oil drops in 1 tbsp coconut or olive oil. Then, immerse one cotton swab in this mixture.
  2. After that, apply it on your closed eyelid. Keep the eye closed for around 5-10 minutes.
  3. This process should be repeated two times every day until you get relief.

3. Aloe Vera

Keeping your eyelids moisturized properly is an important step to cope with eyelid inflammation. Moreover, aloe vera contains the anti-inflammatory agent that helps lower redness, inflammation and swelling. Last but not least, this plant combats against infection effectively. How to use aloe vera for treating inflamed eyelids? Here are detailed guides:

  1. Take an aloe vera leaf and next cut it to extract the fresh gel.
  2. Now apply this gel on the eyelid and gently rub. Let it settle for 10 minutes.
  3. At last, using lukewarm water rinse it off.
  4. This remedy should be used about 2 or 3 times every day. Remember to use the fresh aloe vera gel not use the lotions containing aloe vera gel.

4. Castor Oil

The ricinoleic acid housed in castor oil acts as an anti-inflammatory property. It helps alleviate itching, burning, irritation and pain related to the condition. So, castor oil is also one of the best remedies for eyelid inflammation. Here’s the recipe:

  1. The first step is to use lukewarm water to wash your eyelashes and eyelid thoroughly.
  2. The next step is to apply one warm compress over your eyelid for 5 minutes.
  3. Then, apply castor oil using a cotton swab on your closed eyelid and the lashes prior to you go to sleep.
  4. Rinse your eyes thoroughly by using warm water in the morning.
  5. Do this process once every day for a few days.

5. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil consists of anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce inflammation, pain and itching and restore eye health. Here is the recipe:

  1. At first, take a cotton ball and immerse it in coconut oil.
  2. Now directly place it on your inflamed eyelid for around 15 -20 minutes.
  3. Regularly use this remedy throughout the day for best results.

6. Neem Or Indian Lilac

As mentioned above, dandruff on your eyelashes and scalp is one of the main factors causing eyelid inflammation. Neem contains antibacterial and antifungal agents that help deal with the dandruff.  Here’s the recipe:

  1. First of all, boil a handful of Indian lilac leaves in four cups of water. Let it cool and then strain it.
  2. After this, rinse your eyelashes with this solution about twice or thrice a week until you remove the dandruff completely.

7. Petroleum Jelly

Lice in the hair, eyelashes and eyebrows are also one of the main factors causing eyelid inflammation. Luckily, using petroleum jelly can get rid of them. Here’s the recipe:

  1. You just need to apply a small quantity of pure petroleum jelly on the eyelashes and eyebrows with the help of clean fingers.
  2. Then, keep the eyes closed for around 20-30 minutes.
  3. Using lukewarm water rinse your eyebrows and eyelashes thoroughly.
  4. It’s recommended to do this process about once every other day for one week to inhibit lice from recurring.
