Cosmetic surgery can either be reconstructive or elective. If you want to have this type of surgery done, for whatever reason, it is important that you find a really good surgeon as well, so you can get the results you’re after.

There are a number of things to think about, but specifically the qualifications and experience of the surgeon and rather they have a plastic surgery certification.

How to Find a Good Plastic Surgeon?

Anyone who is a surgeon is allowed to perform plastic procedures, even if they are not specialized in that field. Cosmetic surgery is a reasonably new field of work, which means there are few specific qualifications available in it. Yet, since it is a big money business, more and more surgeons are moving into that specialization. Hence, make sure you check the qualifications they have for your own safety.

They should, naturally, have graduated from a really good school and they should also have a plastic surgery license. If they are licensed, they have gone through accredited training and residencies as well. Some surgeons specialize specifically in reconstructive surgery, others in plastic (elective) surgery and others in both.

You should also look at whether or not the surgeon is a member of a recognized board, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. If they are, then they have actually specialized in training in this field, and they have at least three years of professional experience as well.

When you find a surgeon who is registered with any of these boards, you will know for sure that they are good at what they do. Unfortunately, it also means that you will have to pay a little bit more. However, since these people will permanently change the way you look, spending a bit more for better quality is probably a good idea.

Experience is equally important. Before you undergo any surgery, you should always have consultations with your surgeon. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions, including how long your Dallas plastic surgeon has been performing these types of procedures, for instance.

Make sure you question them properly, however. Just because a surgeon says they have 15 years of experience, for instance, it does not mean they have that experience in an area that is relevant to you. They may have been performing liposuction for 15 years, but if you are interested in breast augmentation, that experience is completely irrelevant.

Finally, you need to trust your instincts. You will be very exposed to your surgeon, both physically and mentally. They will ask you why you feel you need surgery and they will see your body, and particularly the areas you are least proud of.

You cannot do this if you don’t like or trust the surgeon. You have to be able to build up a personal rapport with them and feel like your body is in their good and non-judgmental hands.
