Some of the Benefits of Cod Liver Oil Tablets

Cod liver tablets come from a type of oil that is extracted from the Atlantic cod livers. People commonly take this oil as a body supplement. The tablets are loaded with nutrients. Cod liver is also known to be the source of omega three fatty acids (DHA and EPA). Some of the vitamins that are in the tablets are Vitamin A, and Vitamin D.

The nutrients concentration in the cod liver oil is dependent on the species of the cod which the oil comes from. As medicine, cod liver was first used in the late 18th century. The doctors in that time used it to treat rheumatism.  Early in the 19th-century doctors used it to treat rickets.

By the early 20th century cod liver oil was common as it was given to children to help prevent cases of rickets and other disease conditions that arise due to lack of vitamin D. Below are some of the possible benefits of cod liver tablets.

Right kind of Fat

Every cell in our body is designed in a way it needs fat. The fats that come with omega three which is found in cod liver oil tablets promote skin health.  The fats also increase the absorption of minerals, vitamins and also aid in boosting the immune system of a person.

One major use of fats in our bodies is to make one feel full. Once someone intakes fat, the brain receives some signal that turns off the appetite of a person. Good and healthy fats from cod liver oil slow down the breaking down of carbohydrates into sugar. This process helps in stabilizing a person’s blood sugar.


Arthritis is a disease that inflames the body joints of a person. This causes severe pain and stiffness in a person’s joints. Cod liver oil products are known to be good supplements for people who have arthritis. Marine oils such as cod liver have been proven to help people who have rheumatoid arthritis.

Macular Degeneration

Studies show that omega three from cod liver oil helps support eye health and also prevent age-related macular degeneration. The higher intakes of cod liver fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) delay any occurrence of macular degeneration
Cod liver tablets are high in carotenoids.  The carotenoids aid in producing vitamin A and also prevention of AMD.

Coronary Artery Disease

People who take cod liver oil on a daily basis will have lower chances of having any coronary artery diseases. Daily intake of the tablets with coronary artery may prevent coronary atherosclerosis. Some of the proteins which are found in cod liver oil act as potent antioxidants.

Inflammation which is a defense mechanism in a person’s body is the main cause of plaque buildup in the circulatory system of someone.  Therefore one needs to have a regular intake of fish oils such as cod liver oil that will aid in protection against arteriosclerosis. The cod liver oils or even tablets are also known to protect someone against blood clots in the body.

Repairing wounds

A mouse study that was published in the year 2009 proved that applying around 25% cod liver jelly to ear wounds topically, promote healing.

The application of the ointment topically accelerated the vascular and epithelial components of healing as compared with saline.  The scientists, who had conducted the mouse study, believed that Vitamin A in the oil was the key component in the healing process. This is one great benefit of taking the marine oils.

Cognitive performance

Cod liver oil has been known over the years to contain high amounts of vitamin D. A study on rats showed that there is a link between vitamin D and the cognitive performance of the rats.  The scientist conclusion was that the vitamin D from the cod liver oil might play a crucial role in the maintenance of good brain function in a person’s old age.

In the year 2011, some researchers gave some cod liver oil to some rats. The rats in the test were experiencing some chronic based stress.

The results of the study showed that cod liver oil prevented some cognitive impairment in the rats.  The results were based on a test on memory, anxiety behavior, and loco motors skills of the rats.
