Six Common Causes of Chronic Neck Pain

Nearly 31% of adults in the United States alone experience some form of chronic neck or back pain. That’s an astonishing number of individuals experiencing excessive and typically unnecessary pain. But, what causes the pain?

While there are a number of different causes for neck and back discomfort, most individuals experience this chronic condition are afflicted by one of the six most common causes of the issue. Consider if your neck pain is caused by one of these conditions today and determine what you can do to correct it.

1. Whiplash

Whiplash can easily be considered the most common cause of neck injury today. The condition occurs as a person’s neck is whipped backward and then forced forward very suddenly. The injury often results from a rear-end collision, sports injury, physical abuse, or even an amusement park ride.

The pain associated with whiplash occurs as the soft tissues in the neck are stretched beyond their typical range of motion. Symptoms of whiplash are not always apparent immediately. However, the condition can cause long-term pain and discomfort.

2. Age Related Deterioration

One of the second most leading causes of chronic neck pain is age-related deterioration of the joints, also known as cervical spondylosis. This condition is the result of the constant wear and tear on the cartilage and bones of the spine.

While age is one of the most common influencing factors of this condition, other factors may influence it, too, which is why it is so important to meet with a specialist if you have been diagnosed with this condition.

In many cases, a specialist can identify the exact causes of the condition and create a unique treatment regimen to help reduce the pain you are experiencing.

3. Muscle Strain or Sprain

The common muscle strain or sprain is another cause of chronic neck pain. This type of injury typically occurs as the result of physical activity during which too much force is placed on the muscle or joint. In most cases, chronic strains are caused by repetitive actions.

4. Tension

Tension caused by overuse and excessive stress can also contribute to chronic neck pain. Neck pain caused by tension is usually also accompanied by moderate to severe headaches, an issue which further complicates neck pain.

5. Torticollis

Torticollis, also known as wry neck, is a more complicated cause of chronic neck pain. The condition, which involves the neck being painfully twisted and tilted, may be a congenital defect or the result of damage to the neck muscles or blood supply. The pain associated with this condition is often debilitating and requires extensive treatment from a specialist.

6. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is another condition that may affect the joints of the neck and result in chronic pain. This condition is an autoimmune disease that involves pain, swelling, stiffness, and even loss of function in the joints.

Seeing a specialist for intensive treatment may reduce the progression of the disease and offer relief. Chronic neck pain is an issue that affects a large percentage of the American population. If you are one of those affected, determining the cause is the first step toward treatment.

Additionally, visiting a designated specialist may help expedite treatment and help you get relief. Physical therapy, stem cell therapy and more can be successful in reducing your pain.
