Side Effects of Gastric Bypass Surgery You May Want to Know

If you are looking into ways to lose weight medically without going the physical way, then you might want to consider a gastric bypass surgery. This is a process that makes your stomach smaller so that you cannot take much food as you used to.

However, if you are to consider this kind of surgery, there are things to consider including the side effects the surgery causes. Below are some of the side effects that you might have after you have undergone the surgery.

Nausea and vomiting

This is the most common side effects of the surgery and it is experienced by up to 70 percent of the patients. Research shows that after undergoing the procedure, patients vomit at an average of 2.6 times a week.

The doctor is supposed to give you a bariatric surgery diet, which will fix or improve the problem. In the hospital, being given a larger amount of IV fluids at a faster rate may make you less likely to feel nauseous or vomit. Furthermore keeping a food journal will help in identifying the foods, which seem to cause vomit or nausea.

Dehydration

Dehydration is a condition where the body fluids are abnormally depleted. After the surgery, you are required to drink a lot of water for the next few months so as to replenish the fluids lost in dehydration. You should drink at least two litres of water per day. Lack of drinking water can cause nausea and vomiting, which lead to further dehydration.

Changed bowel movement

After surgery, certain foods can provoke diarrhea or loose stool. Keeping a food journal can be helpful so as to identify the type of foods that seem to cause diarrhea. It can also be as a result of lactose intolerance, therefore, requiring you to get rid of any dairy products from your diet.

Food intolerance

The gastric bypass surgery changes the stomach size and digestive systems, therefore, one has to avoid some foods, beverages, and drugs and also maintain certain diet habits.

It is important that you consult with your doctor before taking any drugs as they can damage your stomach pouch and cause ulcers. It further means that you will have to avoid alcoholic drinks as they have large amounts of calories, which is bad for your diet.

Indigestion

This is the inability to digest or have difficulty in digesting food. It is marked by a burning sensation or discomfort in the upper abdomen. This can be treated by changing your diet and avoiding greasy foods.

Surgeries often come with some effects and it is best to know what you are likely to experience after a surgical procedure. While the side effects can make you nervous, your doctor should tell you what to do to improve them.

Your body needs time to adjust to these changes but most of them will not last for long. When you know what to expect, you are more prepared to deal with. If you are considering having a gastric bypass surgery, this information might be able to help you prepare yourself.
