Containers, kitchen utensils, tooth brushes, raincoats, appliances, toys, and even baby bottles are made from plastic.

The first thing to get straight is that plastic is not a material; It is a combination s of chemicals that is used in the manufacture of various products!

Not all chemicals used in plastic are harmful, but some are extremely dangerous. The numbers stamped on plastic item are for recycling purposes only, so if you do not see a number, look for the chemical listed in the product description, and if you find no information, do not buy or use the item.

Bad plastics

#3– Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC.

PVC contains phthalates. It is found in garden hoses, shower curtains, baby teething rings and toys, and squeeze bottles.  It is even responsible for the “new car smell” in your vehicle. PVCs are highly toxic and easily migrate to anything that they touch.

Phthalates are endocrine disruptors associated with a number of health problems that are on the rise on the U.S. and worldwide, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, infertility (both in women and men) and heart disease.

# 6 – Polystyrene

This is used in packaging of meats, cheeses and in some disposable coffee cups, take-out food containers and egg cartons. This chemical has been classified as a suspected cancer causing agent.

It is more toxic when heated. Polystyrene is also solid and colored. It is found in plastic cutlery, some yogurt cups and clear containers for cakes and other baked items.

#7 – Polycarbonates

The #7 group includes every plastic that isn’t included in 1-6. However, most plastics marked with the #7 are polycarbonates and should not be considered safe.

Okay plastics

#1 Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)

This chemical is used to manufacture sports drink bottles, ketchup, salad dressing, soft drinks, peanut butter, jelly and pickle and jam jars.

#2 High density polyethylene (HDPE)

Plastic milk, water, and juice jugs as well as yogurt and margarine containers are often made with this plastic. So are cereal box liners, grocery¸ trash and retail bags.

#4 Low-density polyethylene (LDPE)

This is often used for bread bags, for frozen foods and some squeeze bottles.

#5 Polypropylene (PP)

Is used to make some ketchup bottles and yogurt and margarine tubs.

While the chemicals in #1,#2,#4, and #5 are considered safe, it is not recommended that you reuse any of these containers.

Research on the Tupperware brand indicates that the company has used safe plastics in all of their items since 2010.

The company disclosed that the vintage line that was promoted as microwave safe, was made with #7 plastic which had BPA. So do not use those older items in the microwave.

What can be done?

First of all, start checking and purge any bad plastic you find in your house.

Second, become part of the solution by letting manufacturers know you will not buy anything packaged or made from toxic plastic chemicals.

Third, get politically active and encourage banning these poisons from our country.

Last, cook and store your foods in stainless steel, glass or safe plastic containers. Do not use any plastic to warm food in the microwave. Heat intensifies the leaching of toxins into your food.

Finally, be encouraged that knowledge is power. Get the word out so others are aware and will also sound the alarm about these toxic chemicals in our environment.
