Falling down might be the scariest thing for the elderly and it usually happens during the cold season, when everything freezes.

It’s the time when injuries occur most. Thousands of seniors fall each year, but most of them don’t go to a doctor right away. This can worsen the situation, especially if the injury is bad.

There is a wide variety of injuries, such as cuts, bone fractures, head trauma, sprains, etc. These are common injuries that most elderly people suffer. No one wants to be in situations like this, but unfortunately, accidents and injuries do occur.

Even though it sounds discouraging, a simple fall can lead to severe injuries, and also, bad self-esteem or depression can occur. Elderly people can fully recover after an injury after months but there are many ways to speed up the process.

Whether you or a loved one suffered a personal injury as a result of someone’s negligence, Adams Law can help you get through these tough times.

Sprains

Almost everyone experienced a sprain at least once, especially when doing physical activities.

For elderly people, though, it gets difficult over the years because the joint tissues become less flexible, so they’re more prone to sprains. Wrist sprains often occur when people try to catch themselves during a fall.

An ankle sprain, for example, is an injury that can occur when you twist your ankle in a weird way. The healing process might be difficult for elderly people.

Bone Fractures

Older people lose their resistance over the years, which can lead to bone fractures. It’s a common injury that occurs because of the high force impact. However, in the case of elderly patients, fractures can be caused by medical conditions such as osteoporosis.

Most fractures are caused by an accident or a fall. The most common injury for elderly people is a hip fracture. However, elders can prevent the risk of fractures by consuming enough calcium, vitamin D, and also, avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.

Head Trauma

Another common injury among the elderly is head trauma. It is a serious and scary situation that needs medical assistance immediately. No one should treat it with superficiality because over time, it can lead to serious problems.

Elderly people have head traumas when falling down, due to lack of strength. Falling down is the most common cause of head trauma, but it can also happen during a car accident or physical assault.

Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder dislocation can occur due to various reasons, such as overextending the arm, falling on it, or an extreme rotation of the shoulder. If an elderly recently suffered a shoulder dislocation, it needs immediate medical assistance.

There’s a high risk to dislocate the arm of an old person by simply not paying attention when helping them move or get out of the bed. That’s why people with limited mobility need to be properly taken care of to protect them from injuries.

One of the most important things is to remember to be patient. These types of injuries need time to heal and by rushing the process, you’ll only cause other medical conditions. To rule out complications, contact your medical professional and get the injury checked as soon as possible.
