Medical Assistants – What Are They and the Growing Demand?

A medical assistant job is one of the promising jobs today. As a matter of fact, it has a promising outlook through the year 2020. Jobs that have something to do with the healthcare industry have a positive outlook.

For the medical assistant job alone, the projected growth is at 31%. It has something to do with the aging baby boomers and they require curative and preventive medical care.

What are the duties and responsibilities of medical assistants?

Medical assistants are an ally of health care professionals. They perform both in the clinical and administrative areas. Although, there is a slight variation in the job description depending on what part of the medical practice the medical assistant is assigned. Some of the duties and responsibilities of medical assistants include the following:

  • Answering telephone calls
  • Welcoming the patients and helping them prepare to meet the doctor
  • Redirecting calls
  • Filling of insurance forms
  • Takes care of the billing
  • Maintaining the patient’s records

How to become a medical assistant?

The training requirement for a medical assistant primarily depends on the office needs. Ideally, healthcare facilities hire someone who has at least two years training and work experience. One of the fastest routes to becoming a medical assistant is through on the job training.

You need to be a high school graduate and be able to find a doctor who is more than willing to provide training. Another way of becoming a medical assistant is by having a formal training through accredited programs.

It would take a few months to two years to earn a certificate and/or diploma. It includes both classroom, laboratory training, and internship.

Many medical assistants are women, although men population are beginning to be a part of the community. If you want to be a part of the healthcare community, but do not have the resources to be a nurse or doctor, then being a medical assistant is the answer.

Various cities in the United States are looking for medical assistants such as Dallas, Phoenix, San Antonio, Chicago, and Seattle, to name a few.

Being a medical assistant is financially and emotionally rewarding job. Just imagine being a part of the healthcare community. The fulfillment of helping others even in the simplest way. Who might know you can upgrade from being a medical assistant to becoming a nurse or a doctor.

At the end of the day, being in the medical field is all about the passion and the desire to helping other people. If you don’t have the heart and compassion for the needy, then you won’t be able to find fulfillment in your job.
