We all love the summer season. It’s the one period you get to have as much fun as you want in the sun. There’s never a dull moment. You attend pool parties, barbeques, or even go on vacation to enjoy lazy days basking in the sun.

However, while doing all these, people are exposed to many things that may get them sick. Nonetheless, summer is the best time for you to maintain and improve your health in a laid-back manner. Below are tips on how to stay healthy in summer.

Eat a healthy diet

We all love a good barbeque with friends and family during the summer. However, this brings with it other problems because warm weather provides the ideal temperature for the multiplication of bacteria. Many times the food is pre-prepared and left to stand in the sun exposing it to contamination and increasing your risk of getting food poisoning. Food to be eaten in barbeques and picnics should be handled carefully and put in a cool place.

Also, we tend to eat too many unhealthy foods in summer. Substitute those unhealthy diets with healthy ones. For instance, eat grilled chicken or fish instead of burgers and hot dogs. Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, as well as berries.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water is a must in summer. You spend more time outside in the sun hence get thirsty fast. Water is lost through sweat. The evaporation of the sweat helps keep your body cool. The water lost needs to be replenished. Many times people mistake thirst for hunger. Drink water whenever you are thirsty. Remember to keep cool and hydrated. Not only does water help us stay fit but also provides a feeling of being full hence reducing the chances of you overeating. Drink 1-2 glasses of water every hour you spend in the sun to avoid dehydration.

Continue or begin exercising

There’s no better way to keep fit and get rid of any extra weight you may have gained than through working out. You can start by taking walks. Walking is an excellent way for you to get fit. Physical exercise is crucial to keep your heart and brain healthy. However, due to the hot temperatures, it is vital for you to take care with how and when you exercise in summer. Work out when the temperatures are lowest, keep your body hydrated, wear loose clothes, and slow your pace.

Try a new sport

Do you want to be more active in the summer months? Trying out a few sports activities is the way to go. The season is perfect for you to have fun outdoors and sports are a great excuse. There are many summer sports you can try out including; swimming, biking, surfing, soccer, tennis, and baseball. These sports are fun even in other seasons but are more enjoyable during the warmer months.

Protect your skin from getting overexposed to the sun

Summer brings with it the problem of getting sunburns. Exposure to ultraviolet rays is dangerous as it damages your skin cells. Make sure to wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat while outside to protect your skin. Sunscreen helps reduce your risk of getting skin cancer as well as slowing down the aging process of your skin. Exposure to too much sunlight may lead to extreme dehydration which is quite dangerous and may lead to you having to be hospitalized. Use sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor(SPF) of above 15 to extend the time of effectiveness an ensure its labeled broad spectrum to protect you from a wide range of radiation.

Exfoliate and moisturize your skin

Summer is the perfect time for you to show off your glowing, healthy skin. To achieve this, you need to keep your skin in top condition by exfoliating regularly. Your body sheds dead cells daily and can make your skin look dull. Exfoliate at least thrice a week to get that radiant and glowing skin everyone envies. Select a gentle exfoliant that contains natural ingredients. For instance, one that contains sugar or oatmeal.

Furthermore, the skin may get dehydrated due to excessive heat and needs to stay moisturized. Apply lotion to your body as it contains more water than oils. Exfoliate and moisturize your skin regularly to keep your skin healthy and glowing all summer long.

Take a break

Summer is the best time to take a break from work and go on vacation. There are many benefits of taking vacation time. You get time to unwind and relax. Taking a break from work has many health benefits including; helping to lower your blood pressure, increasing the production of the stress hormone (cortisol) as well as reducing your heart rate. Not only is a vacation great for your health but it is also an excellent way for you to spend more time with your family and improve your relationships.

Protect your eyes

Wear protective eyewear, such as sunglasses when doing outdoor activities to protect your eyes from the dangerous ultraviolet sun rays. The rays damage your eyes slowly and may affect your vision by putting you at risk of such conditions as cataracts, thickening of the sclera (white part of the eye) as well as macular degeneration. Your eyes are important; they need just as much protection as our skin. Wear protective eyewear such as sunglasses, a hat, and the recommended equipment if you engage in sports.

Get enough sleep

It is not odd for you to go days without sleep in the summer months. There are just too many activities to do that you find little to no time to rest. There are games to play, pool parties to attend, but at the end of the day, we all need a good night’s sleep. Avoid taking naps in the daytime, unless you nap at the same time daily. Maintain a good sleeping schedule by not staying awake too late and sleeping at the same time every day for the same amount of time.

Avoid being over-intoxicated

We all want to have a good time during summer. However, take care not to overindulge. Limit your alcohol intake, especially before bedtime as this affects your sleeping habits. Drinking too many alcoholic beverages while outdoors may lead to dehydration. It makes you sweat as well as urinate more often. When taken in moderation alcohol is said to help prevent heart disease. The recommended amount is 1-2 drinks per day.

Summer is a time to have fun in the sun. Staying healthy in the hot weather is paramount. Remember to use the above tips to keep healthy. They are quite simple and will work for you. Do not let these minor things dull your fun.
