Headaches can be irritating and can easily affect your performance in daily tasks. Some headaches are rooted in serious medical conditions. However, most cases are triggered by simple variables.

These include eating habits, fluids you drink, the weather, the environmental conditions, stress levels, medication you are taking and emotional state. Migraines can be prevented by taking note of your triggers and managing them accordingly. Here are some ways of preventing headaches:

1. Get Some Rest

Headaches are often triggered by the lack of sleep or extreme fatigue. After a hard day, you should even add an extra hour to your normal sleep schedule. It has been noted that using your electronic devices late in the night affects your quality of sleep.

If you can’t avoid your phone or desktop device late in the night, you should consider using a blue light filter. This way, your eyes will still secrete sleep hormone, and you will be able to enjoy quality sleep.

2. Keep Your Blood Sugar Levels Consistent

Sometimes, headaches are caused by a drop in the blood sugar levels. If this appears to be the cause of your migraines, you should consider taking small meals frequently through the day. Eating three major meals in the day is less effective at keeping your blood sugar levels consistent. In the same vein, you should drink water regularly. Dehydration is another common cause of headaches.

3. Work Out Regularly

Exercising on a regular basis can help reduce stress, which is one of the biggest triggers of migraines. If you experience headaches frequently, you should make sure you keep your workouts light and moderate. The result will be a reduction in the duration and severity of your migraines.

The headaches are also likely to occur a lot less frequently. It is important to note that strenuous workouts can worsen your headaches. You don’t have to go to the gym for your workouts.

You can simply engage in activities such as dancing or biking. The more enjoyable your workouts are, the more likely you are to stay committed to the schedule. You are likely to experience greater success if you work out with music that you enjoy.

4. Keep Your Stress Levels Low

As noted before, stress is one of the main causes of headaches. Managing stress will help you reduce the severity and occurrence of your migraines. Here are some tips to help you manage stress:

  • Limit your consumption of alcohol and other drugs. That way, you will be able to enjoy deep and quality sleep.
  • Try to get enough sleep every day. Don’t force yourself out of bed too early.
  • Practice yoga, meditation and breathing exercises regularly.
  • Listen to relaxing music.
  • Some people also find it helpful to engage in community activities. These can help get your mind out of your daily stress triggers.
  • Work out regularly.

5. Keep Track of Your Headache Triggers

There are many causes of headaches and migraines. You can actually avoid headache triggers by keeping a headache diary. Once you get a headache, you should note your last meal and any prevailing conditions that might have caused you stress. If you experience headaches frequently, it would be helpful to record all your meals, mental states and any other variables that may trigger headaches.

The variables could be bright lights, workout routines, the weather, emotional state, loud music and the time. Try to find patterns and use them to locate the triggers of your migraines. That way, you can avoid your migraine triggers and enjoy healthy days.

6. Try Using Preventive Medication

Preventive medication should only be used if your migraines are severe and long-lasting. Specifically, these drugs should be used if your headaches go on for over a week. Also, they can be taken if pain-relieving drugs don’t work on you. Some people experience bad side effects after using painkillers, and preventive drugs can be a better alternative.

A good preventive medication is anti-seizure drugs. These help to relax the nerves in the brain. Some beta-blockers are also effective at preventing migraines. These drugs improve blood flow.
These tips should help you prevent migraines or at least make them less severe.

It is important to note that severe and long-lasting headaches can be a sign of a serious medical condition. If your migraines are unbearable, don’t just jump onto painkillers and preventive medication; be sure to see a doctor for advice and recommendations.
