Five Things to do Daily to Prevent Oral Disease

When it comes to oral hygiene, it’s important to follow your dentist’s advice to brush and floss every day. If you don’t take care of your teeth, you can develop cavities and increase your risk of oral disease. Some dental problems have been linked to serious health issues such as heart disease. For the sake of your teeth and your overall health, it’s essential to follow a regular oral hygiene routine.

Rinse after Every Meal

It’s often not possible to brush after every meal. However, you can rinse your mouth out with water in a restroom after eating. Rinsing out your mouth removes food particles that can quickly become plaque on your teeth and cause bad breath.

Teeth Brushing

You should brush your teeth twice a day to keep them clean and healthy. Using a soft-bristle brush prevents you from damaging the enamel of your teeth. Ideally, you should brush your teeth for at least two minutes every morning and night. The best way to clean your teeth is to brush all the surfaces in a circular motion. When you brush your teeth, be sure to clean your tongue as well. Bacteria can hide in the crevices of your tongue and cause dental problems, not to mention bad breath.

Another important part of daily dental hygiene is flossing. With floss, you can remove the sticky plaque that forms between and on the surfaces of your teeth. Brushing gets rid of much of this plaque, but dental floss or dental tape removes plaque between each tooth. Dr. Bryan Murray, a Raymond dentist, recommends flossing at least once daily to get the best results.

Water Irrigation

In addition to brushing and flossing, it’s a good idea to use a water pick every day for additional cleaning. Water irrigation helps to clean below the gum line, where tooth brushes and dental floss can’t access. The water washes away tiny food particles and plaque and keeps the gums healthier. Gum disease is a serious problem that can lead to tooth loss and health problems.

You can use mouthwash as a final step to twice daily mouth cleaning. Mouthwashes offer several benefits; not only do they give you a fresher breath, they also kill bacteria and remove bacteria-feeding buildup from around your teeth. By rinsing with a mouthwash for at least 30 seconds, you will have a cleaner, healthier mouth.

Good dental hygiene keeps your teeth and gums clean and healthy. The best way to prevent serious dental problems that require extraction, root canal, or gum surgery is to regularly follow the above steps in your daily oral hygiene routine.
