When it comes to first time babies, people seem to completely and totally forget the father. The mother is given all of the advice, she has all of the published literature to refer to, baby literate friends and relatives and all the networks and support she could possibly need.

But Fathers seem to be left completely alone to fend for themselves and to figure it out all on their own, which seems a bit unfair. Dads need advice too!

The best possible advice to new dads has got to be that panicking is okay, it is totally normal. Everyone expects fathers to stay strong but they will be just as scared as the mothers are.

You are allowed to be frightened because everything is changing and different. It would be odd if you were not a little bit scared at least!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Nobody knows everything when it comes to children, no matter how many they might have had, but asking for the benefit of someone else’s experience does not make you weaker or less able to take care of your child; it just makes sense.

If you had a problem with any other area of your life that required an experienced person to help, you wouldn’t have trouble asking, would you? A baby should be no different.

Mood swings and changes in temper may have occurred during pregnancy but they will carry on for a while after the baby is born.

This is perfectly natural, but when things start to get more severe or the low moods last longer, it may be time to talk to the mother of your child about depression.

Post natal depression affects millions of women all over the world and there is absolutely no shame in it, but many women go untreated for years so it is your duty to take care of jer and keep an eye out for warning signs.

Connecting with the baby can be difficult for some fathers as many of them are left out, even by the mother.

But if you want to have a bond with your child then you need to make sure that the mother gives you the time to create the bond. You deserve a chance to bond as much as the mother does, it’s your child too!

Having a baby is not easy for anyone regardless of gender but remaining visible and connected will help ensure a strong bond with your child.
