6 Things You Can Do to Have a Long Lasting Life

There’s no one set way to guarantee you will live a long life. Everyone is different – with different genetics, different dietary habits, different lifestyles – and there’s no accounting for some unseen accident.

However, there are a few things that you can do that will make it more likely that you’ll live a long time. By taking some steps now to alter your daily life, you could set yourself up for a long life ahead of you. Here are 6 things that you can start doing now.

Eat Healthier

If you want to live a long life, your diet is going to play an important role. Having a healthy diet allows you to stay close to your ideal weight, which is good for things like your heart and lungs. The foods we put into our bodies play a large role in how much energy we have, how we feel, and what sort of health complications we can have going forward. For instance, a poor diet can lead to an increased chance of getting Alzheimer’s, as detailed by this blog post.

Luckily, having a healthy diet is not that complicated. By trimming out some of the fatty foods we eat, and substituting in healthier options, you are already taking a big step. The best thing you can do is talk to your doctor, and have them recommend a diet that is suitable for your needs.

Exercise Regularly

Another habit you should get yourself into is regular exercise. Exercise helps us to keep excess weight off, and keeps your organs strong. Not only is exercise good for you physically, but it also helps to remove stress, making it great for your emotional health as well. If exercise has never really been your thing, then perhaps you just haven’t found routine that is right for you.

Consider hiring a personal trainer to motivate you, joining a local sports team, or trying new activities. If walking on a treadmill is too boring for you, go for a hike. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you are up and moving on a regular basis.

Drink Plenty of Water

One thing a lot of us forget is to stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water. Water is the best thing we can drink, and provides plenty of benefits – such as more energy, better mood, clearer skin, and improved kidney function. Invest in a water bottle that you can carry around with you throughout the day, and be sure to fill it up regularly. While drinking other things like tea and juice are fine, you really should be focusing on water. You can learn more about the recommended daily water amounts here.

Only Use Medications When Needed

While medication is great when there is something wrong with you, too many of us turn to it too quickly. As soon as we think we are getting a slight cold or a small headache, we start taking medicine or pills to try and prevent the situation from getting worse. And while these medications may work, they could be doing more harm than good.

Your immune system needs to be able to fight things off so that it can get stronger, and when you take medications right away, it doesn’t have that opportunity. On top of that, medications can be hard on your liver, and taking them too often can have long-term consequences. Talk to your doctor about the right times to use medications, and see if there are some times you can do without.

Get Regular Checkups

Speaking of talking to your doctor, it is important that you get a regular checkup. Checkups allow doctors to monitor your body, and look for early warning signs of larger problems. In many cases a problem can be treated if it is caught early enough, and the best way to catch a problem is through regular checkups.

A regular physical can also monitor things like your diet, your cholesterol levels, and your blood pressure, to ensure you are living a healthy lifestyle. These appointments only take a few hours every year, so be sure to schedule yours.

Keep Your Mind Active

Finally, it is important to take care of your mental health along with your physical health. Studies have shown that keeping your brain sharp as you get older can help prevent you from getting certain diseases.

Even simple things like playing brain games, or doing a crossword puzzle, can have great benefits. Think of something you’d like to learn, and go take a class. Or pick up a musical instrument, and then take some lessons. Whatever it is you enjoy doing, find a way to keep your brain active as you get older.

While no one is guaranteed a long life, the steps above can help to make it a little more likely. Start incorporating them into your daily life, and then reap the benefits for years to come.
