If you are on a Paleo diet, having a strong understanding of the foods you are allowed to eat will help you come up with a daily meal plan with ease.

So get ready to shop in the market for whole foods for the freshest and organic produce you can find. Here are 10 foods you should add to your basket to get you started.

Fish and Meat

1. Chicken

You want to hear good news? Okay, chicken is something you can enjoy from head to feet! Yes, you’re not dreaming. You can definitely eat the thighs, wings, legs, and even the breast part! Here’s something you should know if you are just starting. Chicken breast is a great source of lean protein. That is the reason why it is considered a staple food for Paleo buffs! Now, you need not to say no to chicken wings when you’re at a sports bar!

2. Pork

Back then, it would have been wild boar because the meat from pigs weren’t readily available. Thank goodness that things quickly changed. Today, we have a variety of pork types – bacon, pork chops, ham – to name a few. Just make sure that when buying pork, you are getting the fresh and organic cuts.

3. Turkey

Aside from chicken, you have another poultry option – turkey. You can happily indulge in it, without that guilt feeling! What’s even better is that you can easily get this at the nearest grocery stores! Well, of course, it would be great to opt for the roasted turkey breast instead of cold cuts. Obviously, lunch meals with sodium and nitrates are never Paleo.

4. Salmon

If you want to add fish into your diet, you might want to add salmon into your weekly meal plan. Not only is it a great source of protein, it’s also packed with Omega 3s. Experts suggest you go for the wild Alaskan salmon. Though it is a bit pricey, the feeling of being closer to the Stone Age is an experience you would not want to miss.

5. Broccoli

In Paleo, fiber plays a vital role as it aids in digestion. Basically, it gets things moving properly. It’s no wonder why it’s recommended for you. So as much as possible, balance your meat intake by helping yourself with broccoli and other veggies. If you want, you can even use coconut oil with it.

6. Cauliflower

Usually paired with broccoli, cauliflower is a vegetable that is ideal for those on a Paleo diet. However, if you are not used to eating it, you might want to get familiar with it first. Still, you won’t have a hard time with that because it is versatile and makes a great addition to recipes.

7. Watercress

Well, who isn’t familiar with watercress? Due to its buttery taste, it’s considered a tasty addition to salads. It’s just good to have this type of green on your diet because you will be ingesting so much meat. By the way, you can purchase it from the produce section in the market.

8. Avocado

A wonderful addition to meals, avocado is a healthy fruit that provides you with potassium. Also, it is an excellent source of healthy fats. So whenever you feel the need to grab a snack, satisfy your cravings with a piece of avocado.

10. Watermelon

WatermelonWatermelon is everybody’s favorite! In fact, like coconut oil, it’s considered a superfood because of the antioxidants it contains. Since Paleo diet is more on meat, you might need watermelon for phytonutrients and fiber.

If you’ve already tried eating Paleo before, but left it for quite some time, then it’d be best to get back on track with a Paleo Restart Program. You can read more of it in a post published on Healthable, “What You May Not Know about Paleo Restart Program”. But no matter what your decision is, here is one thing you must know. The Paleo diet is not just about eating healthy foods.

It’s also about living healthy. Thus, practice better sleeping habits, stay away from stressful activities, be involved in various fitness movements, get rid of environmental toxins, and spend time outdoors! After all, there are no strict rules on Paleo lifestyle. It’s basically a well-rounded approach to life.
