Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver tablets come from a type of oil that is extracted from the Atlantic cod livers. People commonly take this oil as a body supplement. The tablets are loaded with nutrients. Cod liver is also known to be the source of omega three fatty acids (DHA and EPA). Some of the vitamins that are in the tablets are Vitamin A, and Vitamin D.

The nutrients concentration in the cod liver oil is dependent on the species of the cod which the oil comes from. As medicine, cod liver was first used in the late 18th century. The doctors in that time used it to treat rheumatism.  Early in the 19th-century doctors used it to treat rickets.

A mouse study that was published in the year 2009 proved that applying around 25% cod liver jelly to ear wounds topically, promote healing.

The application of the ointment topically accelerated the vascular and epithelial components of healing as compared with saline.  The scientists, who had conducted the mouse study, believed that Vitamin A in the oil was the key component in the healing process. This is one great benefit of taking the marine oils.

Cognitive performance

Cod liver oil has been known over the years to contain high amounts of vitamin D. A study on rats showed that there is a link between vitamin D and the cognitive performance of the rats.  The scientist conclusion was that the vitamin D from the cod liver oil might play a crucial role in the maintenance of good brain function in a person’s old age.

In the year 2011, some researchers gave some cod liver oil to some rats. The rats in the test were experiencing some chronic based stress.

The results of the study showed that cod liver oil prevented some cognitive impairment in the rats.  The results were based on a test on memory, anxiety behavior, and loco motors skills of the rats.
