Polio

The polio virus causes Poliomyelitis which is also known as infantile paralysis; this deadly and contagious disease affects the brain and spinal cord leading to paralysis in some cases. In our previous article, we saw the three types of polio; paralytic polio, non-paralytic polio and post-polio syndrome.

It was said that post-polio syndrome happens in 20 to 50% of individuals who have had polio before and recovered fully.

General symptoms of polio are tiredness, nausea, sore throat, vomiting, fever headache and stomach pain; symptoms of non-paralytic polio are fever, sore throat, fatigue, meningitis, vomiting, muscle tenderness and spasm, arm and leg stiffness, back and neck pain and headache; symptoms of paralytic polio are loss of reflexes, severe spasm, muscle pain, floppy limbs, loss limbs that sometimes happen on one side of the body, sudden paralysis which can be temporary or permanent and deformed limbs especially on the hips, ankles on feet; while symptoms of post-polio syndrome constant muscle and joint weakness, muscle pain that gets worse, becoming tired and exhausted easily, chronic fatigue, muscle wasting, trouble swallowing and breathing, sleep apnea, low tolerance of cold temperature, mood swings, weakness in previously un-involved muscles, memory problems and difficulty concentrating, depression and sleep problems.

There is no cure or treatment for polio; only vaccines are available, and there many controversies surrounding polio vaccines. So in this we will be looking at natural ways to prevent, treat and manage the symptoms of polio. Most of these natural remedies can prevent post-polio syndrome from happening.

High doses of vitamin C

In 1948, there was a deadly polio outbreak in America; this affected thousands of people with most of them losing the ability to move their legs.

When all this was happening and people were left to die and become paralyzed because conventional medicine couldn’t help; Frederick Robert Klenner was a medical doctor who used mega doses of Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to CURE ALL his patients who had polio.

Apart from polio, he also treated other illnesses successfully with high doses of different vitamins but vitamin C was his major treatment for polio. During the 1948 epidemic he received a fair share of polio patients and he CURED THEM ALL, including one with both legs paralyzed.

He had no grants; he did not do lab testing, no cruel animal testing and no side effect because the vitamin C is not a synthetic toxic. Before the Salk polio vaccine was introduced, Dr. Fredrick handled the polio virus easily and inexpensively without adverse side-effects but his colleagues simply ignored him.

Frederick Robert Klenner, M.D produced papers on his polio cure and on June 10, 1949 in Atlantic City, New Jersey; Dr. Frederick Robert Klenner made a presentation on his findings on polio cures at the Annual Session of the American Medical Association; his colleagues ignored him and till date his cures and findings are still ignored.

Dr. Frederick Robert Klenner said “When proper amounts are used, it will destroy all virus organisms. Don’t expect control of a virus with 100 to 400 mg of C.” “Some physicians would stand by and see their patient die rather than use ascorbic acid because in their finite minds it exists only as a vitamin” Dr. Frederick said.

Vitamin C is the most effective natural remedy for poliomyelitis, taking high doses of vitamin C orally will eliminate polio virus in your body. 20,000 to 40,000 mg of oral vitamin C daily is required to treat polio; please this should be done under the supervision of a medical doctor.

You can also make it a point of duty to eat lots of vitamin C rich foods every day. Good sources of vitamin C with their vitamin C content are Guava (377mg), black currant (203mg), 1 cup of raw red pepper (190 mg), kiwi fruit (164 mg), 1 cup of raw green pepper (120 mg), 1 large orange (82 mg), 1 cup of strawberries (89.4 mg), 1 cup of chopped papaya (86.5 mg), 1 cup of raw broccoli (81.2 mg), 1 cup of raw kale (80 mg), 1 cup of fresh parsley (78.9 mg), 1 cup of fresh pineapple (78.9 mg), 1 cup of raw Brussels sprouts (74.8 mg), 1 cup of grapefruit (71.8 mg), 1 cup of raw peas (58 mg), 1 cup of raw chopped cauliflower (46.4 mg) and mango (45.7 mg).

You can eat these fruits and vegetables whole, don’t throw away any part, the best way to do this is to make smoothies with them. In this way, you use the whole part of the fruit and no part/nutrient is wasted.

You can also mix leafy vegetables with fruits and blend till smooth and then you can add organic honey for taste and drink it immediately it is poured from the blender.

Try to eat the vegetables raw and if you must cook them, do not overcook them, slight heat is enough so that the vitamins you are trying to get out of it won’t be destroyed.

Magnesium chloride

The knowledge that Magnesium Chloride can prevent, treat and reverse paralysis in polio is owed to Professor Pierre Delbet (1861-1957); he was a French surgeon looking for a solution to clean wounds because the traditional antiseptic solutions actually mortified tissues and facilitated the infection instead of preventing it.

He tested several mineral solutions and discovered that Magnesium Chloride was the best; he found out that Magnesium Chloride was harmless for tissues and it had positive effect over leucocytic activity and phagocytosis; so it was perfect for external wounds treatment.

He performed lots of “in vivo” (inside living organisms) and “in vitro” (outside a living organism) experiments with Magnesium Chloride and found it effective against a wide range of illnesses including cancer and polio.

When he treated polio patients with high doses of magnesium chloride, they got better within days and their paralysis were reversed. He treated his polio patients with this miracle mineral by oral and intravenous application.

Another French doctor, A. Neveu M.D, cured several diphtheria and polio patients with Magnesium chloride within two days and many more doctors and scientists inspired by the work of Pierre and Neveu have conducted lots of experiments which have proved the effectiveness of magnesium chloride against Polio and a long list of other diseases.

In treating polio, these French doctors diluted high doses of magnesium chloride (amount differs with age and symptoms) with ordinary water which was given to the patient at interval like 3, 6 or hours interval, depending on the age and severity.

Meet a medical doctor who is knowledgeable in natural medicine and natural cures to help you through this step. In case you don’t have a doctor like that then you can try Neveu suggestion; Dr. Neveu believed desiccated Magnesium chloride should be every house and treatment should begin immediately when the signs of polio are noticed.

The first sign of polio is usually a sore throat accompanied by stiffness of the vertebral column (that is a feeling of stiffness at the back of the neck); Dr. Neveu suggested that when this sign is noticed, a solution consisting of 20 grams of desiccated Magnesium chloride in 1 litre of water should be prepared and taken every six hours.

He said within two days, the patient will be okay and totally cured and he also advised polio patients to take high doses of vitamin B.

Dr. Neveu said that “the virus of Poliomyelitis destroys the nerve substance of the anterior horns of the marrow, and this destruction leaves in its wake sclerotic scars that escape all medical or surgical intervention.

The destruction of the nervous substance occurs in a period of time more or less long, and the magnesium arrests the process. In my opinion, wherever the nerves are involved, I would add massive doses of the whole vitamin B complex”.

Vitamin B

A study has said that deficiency of this vitamin puts one at risk of contracting polio; some alternative medicine practitioners give polio patients vitamin B12 injections and many naturalists praise its effectiveness against polio.

Some researchers believe that this vitamin interacts with polio vaccine and can cause some adverse side effect, so it is advised to take this vitamin under the supervision of a medical doctor when you have taken the polio vaccine.

Ayurvedic Treatment

Ayurveda is the ancient or traditional healing methods of the Indians. This ancient healing method can reduce the symptoms of polio, help polio patients to recover fast and help survivors not to have a re-occurrence like post-polio syndrome.

According to this healing system; polio occurs when there is a divergence in vata-pitta-kamba which affects the dhosa (energies of the body). This physiological shift causes toxins (ama) to build up and attack the nervous system.

To be treated positively Ayurvedic says that there must be a re-balancing of these within the body and to achieve this re-balancing massages, treatment with medicated rice and use of herbs like fennel, licorice, coriander, black pepper and ginger are employed.

Homeopathy

This is a system of treatment in which diseases are treated by minute doses of natural substances that when given to a healthy person will cause the symptoms of the disease in that healthy person

Many polio survivors owe their full recovery to homeopathic treatment and medicines. If you have access to a qualified, experienced and licensed homeopathic doctor; don’t delay in contacting the doctor for help.

Before you go for homeopathic treatment, here is a word of advice from a polio survivor who was cured by a homeopathic doctor. “Homeopathy is not for everybody. It is only for the people that actively want to get well.

You have to be willing to sacrifice things like smoking and coffee. Instant food and canned food, tap water. You must work to educate yourself. You must become observant about your body. It is hard work. Your reward, Homeopathy cures.”

Biotherapy

This is another alternative medicine that can prevent and treat post-polio syndrome. This branch of alternative healing makes use of nutritional supplementation that includes antioxidants, minerals and microelements, herbal medicine, vitamins, amino acids, essential fatty acids, enzymes, probiotics (friendly intestinal flora), adaptogens and more that help to stop fatigue, muscle weakness, arthritis, pain, depression, and insomnia in polio survivors with PPS.

Bio therapists also make use of acupuncture, electro acupuncture and electro muscle stimulation which helps to

  • Improve microcirculation (This means that the brain, nerves and muscles will all get more nutrients and oxygen for proper function),
  • Promote the manufacture of brain neurotransmitters, (the special chemicals that take part in nervous conductivity, muscle contraction, and muscle tone),
  • Reduce stress, decrease depression, and control pain.
  • Promote alertness during the day, allowing for a sound night’s sleep.
  • Stimulate nerve and muscle regeneration.
  • Improve memory and concentration.
  • Increase muscle mass, improve stamina and endurance, and increase energy

Some bio therapist can conduct hypnosis but you can chose not to accept that because of the controversies surrounding it and the spiritual implications.

They can also help patients quit smoking, lose weight, stop caffeine addiction and help them exercise for optimum functions of the muscles.

If you or someone you know is suffering from post-polio syndrome, please look for a bio therapist for help.

Ginger

Ginger is another wonderful natural remedy that helps in the treatment of polio; small to large portions of raw ginger can be eaten by the patient several times daily.

It can also be added generously to the patient’s food and ginger and lemon herbal tea can be given to the patient three times daily. Ginger essential oil can be used to massage the whole body, especially the affected part and it can also be taken orally.

Licorice roots

This is a powerful herbal remedy for poliomyelitis; take the root extract capsules twice daily.

Cat’s claw

This herbal remedy helps in fighting poliomyelitis when the extract capsules are taken 2 to 3 times daily.

Astragalus

This ancient antiviral Chinese herb treats polio; take the extract capsules twice daily.

Other natural remedies are black pepper, fennel and coriander; they should be added generously to the patient’s meal.
